Prompt:

There has been an increased commitment by educators and educational research to diversity within the classroom. In the past decade, these ideas have shifted from diversity to also encompass inclusion, belonging, community, and equity. We come to our teaching journey from different walks of life, different paths chosen, different roads traveled. In this way, these issues of equity often look different to each of us yet ALL of our classrooms are often filled with different genders, sexes, races, ethnicities, and abilities.

How will you go about building a classroom community where all students are seen and heard and valued? What steps do you take to ensure the building of community and what impact does this have on student performance in the classroom?

This answer requires you to reflect on your experience as student, as teacher, as community member, as a human being. While you are welcome to cite outside research, this is more a reflective prompt based on the principles of Universal Design for Learning.
