I define healthcare informatics as the statistic side of healthcare. This refers to the numbers side of things such as cost. I asked one of my colleagues what healthcare informatics means to her, and she stated “healthcare informatics is a way for everyone to see the data behind what is working and what is not. This is how we see what is working between doctors, nurses, and techs and how we know the patient is getting the safest care overall. The numbers show us the facts of how effective we are being and providing the best care overall and ensure we are always doing right by the patient. I had asked another coworker the same question and he had a similar response. He said “Informatics are the way we ensure what we are doing is working. The numbers provide insight as to what is effective and what isn’t. The informatics are the numbers and data gathered overtime when new policies or procedures are started”. “Healthcare Informatics is defined as “the integration of healthcare sciences, computer science, information science, and cognitive science to assist in the management of healthcare information” (Admin, 2021). We all had similar definitions of informatics, but they still varied. We were correct in the aspect of using different approaches to see what works and what doesn’t, however, we all focused more on numbers and not on the science aspect. We were correct in the way we believe informatics is based on trials and trying different things to see what works the best and is the most effective. Overall, I learned a lot about informatics and how important they are in healthcare.

I think of informatics as a practice that uses technology to help streamline practices, promote safety measures, and share information among medical providers and caregivers. When I asked a couple of peers what they thought of the term informatics one said it’s about updating our charting system, and the other said it’s the people who design our programs like our phones and Meditech. The American Nurses Association defines nursing informatics as “a specialty that integrates nursing, science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice” (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, 2023).

The informatics team at our facility does assist with updates to our charting systems and our internal mobile communication system, but they also help push initiatives for patient safety such as mobile laboratory scanning systems and appropriate use of tools such as our electronic medication administration system.
