Movie ReviewsDescriptionWatch three movies: in Week 5 (Chinese movie), Week 8 (Korean movie) and Week 11(Japanese movie). The information on the three movies can be found in the pages of these weeks. Each movie review is worth 8% of your final grade for a total of 24%.Turnitin will be used for this assignment. No more than 1,500 words, a good movie review should involve the elements and respond to thequestions specified below:1. Describe the film in general terms. What subjects does it cover? Describe the plot and thesetting. What issues does it raise? What do you see as the main purpose of the film?2. What are the major theme(s) of the film?3. How has the film helped you further understand the culture and/or society of the country? The movies selected are usually highly ranked and representative of the three countries we study.Used as an important supplementary learning source to help students further understand thecountries that are studied, the movies chosen for the course usually cover some important and/orserious social, cultural and/or political topics and have people think of various important issuesin human societies.Warning: Given the educational nature of the movies selected for the course, some of you mightfind the contents of one particular movie or movies depressing, distressing and/or disturbing, such as sensitive language, violence, sexual scenes, etc. Hence, viewer discretion is advised.TurnitinTurnitin will be used for this assignment. Please see the University Policies page for informationabout Turnitin and read on for how it will be used in this course. How Turnitin will be used in EASIA 100RTurnitin is a text matching tool that works by comparing your movie review assignment with adatabase of millions of web pages, academic books and articles, as well as other students' papers. In EASIA 100R you will have the opportunity to use Turnitin yourself, in order to assess yourdraft version of your movie reviews so that you can identify and then correct any problemsbefore you submit your final version for grading. Your instructor will check your finalsubmission of your movie reviews with Turnitin, after the due date. You are encouraged to useTurnitin to check your draft written comparison yourself.

Any submission with a Turnitin score of 5% and above will be failed and any submissionwith a Turnitin score below 5% but above 1% will be penalized with the loss of a grade of10%-50% at the discretion of the instructor. How will it work?Submit your draft to the appropriate Movie Review dropbox. In that dropbox you will be able tosee the Turnitin originality check results for your draft. You can then make changes to your draftand submit your final written comparison to the Movie Review dropbox. After the due date, yourinstructor will grade the final version that you've submitted to the dropbox. Please note: The Movie Review dropboxes are set up so that only the final submission stays inthe dropbox. All previous submissions will be overwritten. When should I submit my draft(s)?We recommend that you submit your Movie Review assignments to the dropbox at the beginningof the week the review is due. Once you submit your draft to the dropbox it might take sometime (i.e., minutes, or in some cases even a day or more) to receive the Turnitin OriginalityReport. You'll need to give yourself time to interpret the report and then make any necessaryadjustments to your review before submitting your movie review. How do I see the Originality Report? You can view the Originality Report from the Folder Submissions page. Click the colouredsection beside the percentage rating to view the associated Originality Report. What will I receive from Turnitin?Turnitin highlights and colour-codes unoriginal content and produces an Originality Report thatincludes a similarity index (a percentage) indicating how much of the submission was notoriginal. The Originality Report can help you identify where you might have unintentionallyused poor paraphrasing when summarizing information from another source. When the Originality Report is ready, you will see a percentage of the amount of matched (i.e.,unoriginal) content. A lower percentage rating indicates that most of the content is original; ahigher percentage rating indicates that much or all of the content matches content found in othersources and will require further investigation. The percentage ranges are associated with colours,as follows: Blue: ≥ 0 and < 20% Green: ≥ 20 and < 40% Yellow: ≥ 40 and < 60% Orange: ≥ 60 and < 80% Red: ≥ 80 and ≤ 100%

How do I interpret the Originality Report? The percentage itself only tells you how much of the paper is the same as other sources (i.e., howmuch of your content is not original): the higher the percentage, the more the assignment willrequire revisions. Note that there is no “safe” colour or percentage. Therefore, no percentage orcolour in the Originality Report can fully evaluate whether text has been plagiarized.Rather than focusing solely on the percentage, go through your paper and look at the highlightedsections. Those are where some re-writing needs to be done.If you need help interpreting the originality report you can refer to the Interpreting the SimilarityReport from the Turnitin website. Cumbria University also has a good video on how to interpretthe Turnitin Originality Report. If you need help with paraphrasing, you can seek help from the Writing and CommunicationCentre. How To Submit Your AssignmentPlease note that the following instructions pertain to this specific assignment.
