PEER RESPONSES

The first thing that came to my mind after watching to Dr. Gibb’ speech was a company that I have been following for a long time: Dave’s Killer Bread. This company takes pride in giving people a second opportunity and most of its employees are hired regardless of criminal history. They believe that someone’s past does not define their future. In

Dave’s Killer was ranked as one of the 5000 growing companies. I believe that this company is a great example of what we should be focusing on as society. Not exactly fixing problems for people but actually teaching people to solve their problems on their own and at the same time become part of the solution to another problem.

I do agree that employers should hold people accountable and there are rules to be followed but if someone needs a chance to make things better and that someone has the willingness to learn and take care of their families that opportunity should be there, and this ecosystem should be part of creating a successful community.

Consumers from all walks of life will be a customer therefore we should try to give a second opportunity to hire those who have a past that prevents them from getting a job, companies should try to recruit people from all walks of life and be open to create a strong workforce within. At the end business is a force for good and it can elevate humanity.

Dave’s Killer is providing value for society, and I do believe that a talented person will find their way to success if you give them the right opportunity.

According to Dr. Randy Gibb, “conscious capitalism” entails adopting the following four elements to maintain employee interest: purpose, leadership, culture, and stakeholder. The closer a firm is to its workers, the more invested they will be in the company’s success and the better they will perform both on the job and in their personal life. Additionally, Gibb thinks that conscious capitalism may serve as a vehicle to help the poor rise beyond their circumstances. When I consider businesses that have implemented conscious capitalism efforts, Cisco is one that springs to me. Cisco provides its workers with family-friendly perks and encourages them to balance work and parenthood. When it comes to assisting employees in furthering their careers, Cisco is among the best in the country. Conscious capitalism may also be approached by examining how corporations treat their employees within the workplace and how their employees feel they are treated. One aspect of being a mindful business is changing the way the firm markets itself to potential customers and workers.

Dr. Gibb defines as conscious capitalism as a social responsibility to bring a work environment that promotes professional, mental, emotional, and spiritual growth while considering the impact of the environment as well. Companies that promote and use conscious capitalism are Whole Foods and Starbucks, while I also believe the company I work for, Kendra Scott, promote the same principles. My company is heavily involved in social concerns such as cancer research and the wellness of their employees. We have events and products that give back to cancer research and have also financially supported families who are impacted by cancer. The most impressive way I believe Kendra Scott incorporates conscious capitalism is to pour back into its employees the way most companies pour into their clients. My company holds the same value and care to their workers as they would with Kendra Scott herself. Companies such as Kendra Scott benefit from these principles because it widens the audience and gives the same care a local business would within the community. In my opinion, when a company gives the same care to their workers as they do to their clients/consumers, they are becoming a company people not only want to support by buying a product/service, but a company that people want to support by being involved in its growth opportunities. Both are necessary for any company.

To Dr. Gibbs conscious capitalism is something that has already been in some businesses but it has like a new narrative to have a good business and have engaged employees. Being able to have the good business and employees the business needs to have a purpose, stakeholder, leadership, and a culture. I believe the company that displays conscious capitalism the way Dr.Gibbs explained it is The Home Depot. I used to work for them and in the meantime I worked there they really looked out for their employees and for their customers. They were heavy on the “Customers are always right.” They would also make sure their employees are properly trained before putting them in the sells floor. I was a cashier when I was working there and every October they had cashier appreciation and they would give us snacks all month of October. In the lunchroom area they had vending machines are if someone was struggling financially they provided food for their employee. Every holiday they had potlucks for their employees and even in summer time they would have popsicles to make sure employees were cool. For customers they made sure they had assistance. When it was time to check out and a cashier is not busy they must be out their register and out on the floor to ring a customer out all electronics must be put away they were never allowed to be out. Stakeholders are able to benefit so much in the way that employees behave toward their customers. If there is always that good customer service and customers always feel helped and heard they will always come back and provide more business to the company.

Dr. Gibbs described conscious capitalism as an idea that is nothing new. It is to create an environment that has a culture and makes a workplace more enjoyable and that has value. Conscious capitalism brings awareness to the higher purpose of the product or service. The impact of work life can heavily impact a worker’s personal life and conscious capitalism is to show that business can uplift the community in a positive way. A company that I have witnessed that followed this idea is Facebook. My aunt worked as the global project manager and I was able to go to the headquarters in California. The work environment there portrayed culture, value, and purpose. Everyone felt excited to go to work and this impacted their work ethics as well. The headquarters offered food, activities, and just an overall beautiful landscape for their workers to view as they work. Stakeholders can benefit from this because as I mentioned earlier, the workers were excited to go to work and this reflected their work ethic as well.

In the video Dr. Gibb says that Conscious Capitalism is good business that has a good work environment for their employees. A company that best displays these behaviors is Costco. Costco has show these behaviors by how they treat their employees. They give their employees health benefits and has a safe workplace environment. The stakeholders benefit from this over time. Costco will continue to grow as more jobs are available, the more the stakeholders will benefit from the way the company treats their employees. The employees will be more willing to share how well the company and will help fill the empty jobs.
