Microbiology Assignment

Eukaryotic Microbes

This week, you will create a presentation on one of the topics below. The presentation is from the perspective of a healthcare professional or community health expert. Your final product is one that could be used to educate the general population on the topic.

At the bottom of the directions, there are links to Getting Started with PowerPoint, which are directions to create an engaging presentation. Additionally, there is a link to the How-To Videos page. Please view each of these prior to beginning working on your presentation.

Eukaryotic microbes include fungi, algae, protozoa, and helminths.

Choose one of the following eukaryotic topics for your presentation:

  • Plasmodium falciparum (malaria)
  • Giardia lamblia
  • Leishmania
  • Trichomonas vaginalis
  • Toxoplasma gondii
  • Trichophytan rubrum (ringworm)
  • Candida albicans
  • Amanita phalloides (poisonous mushrooms)
  • Rhizopus stolonifera (black bread mold, decomposes fruits and vegetables)
  • Mucormycosis
  • Nematodes (roundworms)
  • Cestodes (tapeworms)
  • Trematodes (flukes)

The steps you will follow to complete the presentation are:

Research your topic.

Using your own words (no copy/paste allowed) create a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation that includes:

  • A description of the microbe
  • Images of or that relate to the microbe – one image per slide is required
  • How the microbe is transmitted to humans
  • Who is most likely to be infected by the microbe and the circumstances under which they may be infected
  • How to avoid transmission of the microbe
  • What the signs and symptoms are for the infection
  • The treatment and any side-effects
  • Any long-term effects that may occur from the infection

You goal is to create a convincing message to help people avoid contracting the microbe.

Once you add the details you wish to share for your chosen topic to the PPT, you need to add additional details to the speaker’s notes section These must include at least 100 words for each topic slide and expand on the details on the slide. All summarized materials must be presented in APA 7th editionLinks to an external site. format with appropriate citations and references. Citations go with the content on the slides and in the speaker’s notes. References go on their own slide(s) at the very end.

The PPT presentation must have a title slide, a minimum of four topic slides, and a minimum of one reference slide. The slides must have four or five bullet points with 5-10 words for each bullet. Do NOT write full paragraphs on the slide. That part goes in the speaker’s notes section. You can learn how to access the speaker’s notes in the Getting Started with PowerPoint document linked at the bottom of the page.
