Let’s practice using the scientific method: I want to know which sunscreen is the best sunscreen to use to protect from harmful UV rays. I have 5 different types/brands to try. Thankfully, there are beads that I can purchase that react to UV light.  They are clear until exposed to UV light, then they turn bright colors.  In my experimental setup, I will have 6 groups. One group will be the control group and will consist of only beads and no sunscreen. The other 5 groups will consist of beads and one type of sunscreen applied to the beads.

The answer includes the four components below:

1. Name the independent variable in my example UV bead experiment.

2. Name the dependent variable in my example UV bead experiment.

3. Name one controlled or standard variable in my example UV bead experiment.

4. Describe an experimental design and setup to test the product of your choice.  Make sure to identify the independent, dependent, and standard variables.
