Overview

Like the Issue Analysis Paper, the Book Review is a tool to assist you in honing your analytical and writing skills as you interact with international law and policy. This week you will consider the concepts, ideas, and themes in a book written on the dawn of a new century. Like the Issue Analysis Paper, please consider major groups involved in the policies and ideas presented, laws and/or policies that came into being as a result of this book, the benefits or challenges of involvement by international organizations, and how a biblical worldview can be applied to understanding the outcome of the issue. The critical analysis and application you apply to this paper will be vital experience as you prepare to write your final briefing paper.

Instructions

You will write a book review on Our Global Neighborhood by the Commission on Global Governance. Your Book Review must include 3 sections: Summary, Critique and Application.

Your summary must recap the main theme of the book and answer the following questions: What is the overall perspective, purpose, or argument of the book? If the author wanted you to get one idea from the book, what would it be?

Your critique must present your evaluation of the book’s strengths and weaknesses. You can offer agreement or disagreement and identify where you find the work exemplary or deficient in its knowledge, judgments, or organization. Provide concrete evidence for your assertions. Support judgments with references from the textbook reading in this course. Be sure that your evaluation is balanced, respectful, and fair. Control the tone of your critique. Your critique must answer the following questions: What is noteworthy? What has the book accomplished? In what ways is the book effective or persuasive? Challenge assumptions, approaches, or arguments made by the author. Does the argument make sense?

Your application must demonstrate how the book has enhanced your understanding of current public policy issues. You will briefly assess a current public policy issue in current events considering the economic theories presented in this material. You must also introduce new ideas that go beyond the book if they complement ideas you have gleaned from reading the book.

Do not summarize or critique the chapters chronologically. Consider the book as a whole. Avoid excessive quotations. State the authors’ viewpoints in your own words and give specific page references when paraphrasing.
