In three of the chapters you read for today–“Birding While Black,” “Jawbone” and “Thinking”–Lanham explores how powerfully social identity (how we imagine ourselves to exist in relations to other social beings) shapes how different people experience place, but also how the rituals created by people in a place can shape social identity. In other words, its a dynamic situation rather than a one-way causality.
