Interviewing: Activities in Progress to Reduce Health Disparities Report[WLO: 2] [CLOs: 2, varies depending on topic]

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, please read Chapter 3 and Chapter 12 in the textbook.

The purpose of the interview project is to identify and critique activities in progress (research, intervention programs, policies, etc.) for the elimination of inequalities that directly impact health such as racism, sexism, poverty, social exclusion, substandard housing, and others, at the state or local level in the state you reside, or nationally through a federal agency, or some other professional organization.

Your assignment will include two parts.

Part 1

Present a written report of your interview question by question, providing information on the activity the interviewee highlighted as addressing the social inequality.

Interview a professional working in an agency or program aimed at the elimination of social inequalities such as racism, sexism, poverty, social exclusion, substandard housing, or others, that directly impact health at one of the varying levels of intervention (individual, household, community, etc.). Your report must include the following:

  • Describe their program, research, policy, or funding as it relates to the elimination of social inequalities that directly impact health.
    • How are they funded?
    • Who do they fund?
    • How much funding do they provide for these social inequality programs?
    • What is the population affected or current focus in social inequalities interventions?
    • What do they do with these programs?
    • How do they make certain the program is reaching those in the greatest need?
  • Explain what they think the contributors are to the inequality being discussed.
  • Discuss their operating conceptual model of how they expect the things they do to address the inequality.
  • Describe what they think are some limiting factors in achieving their goals.
  • Share when they expect to see results.
  • Illustrate some of the successes to date.
  • Ask two additional questions of your own to identify and critique activities in progress related to the program, research, policy, or funding.

Be sure to plan your interview well in advance as it may be very challenging to coordinate your schedule with those busy professionals, and you may need more than one conversation to complete your interviews.

Part 2

In this next section of your paper, you are to write an essay-format response that focuses on your interpretation of the interview and the research of the agency or program. In your paper, include the following:

  • Identify the strengths of the agency or program.
  • Discuss the limitations of the agency or program.
  • Assess if you think the activities they discussed will reduce the inequality.
  • Evaluate what might be needed to improve their effectiveness by year 2025.
  • Propose recommendations that the professional could implement to improve effectiveness on elimination of social inequality.

Make certain to place the contact information for the person you interviewed at the end of your paper.
