What is the topic? For this assignment you will write a summary and present
at
least two different responses to our class reading: “College
Mentors Serve Savvy Students Most”
Who is the audience? Your audience will be the Oakton community, students,
student
support staff, faculty and administrators.
What is my role as writer in
this assignment?
As a college student, you will be able to bring in your own
unique perspectives. You will also need to work to make sure
your experiences are clearly written so that other audience
members who are not students can really see your point of
view.
What are some of the
limitations or “constraints” of
this assignment?
The word count must be at least 1,125 words. Please try to
keep limit below 1,500 words.
What is the genre (form)? This will be in the form of an essay
What’s a suggestion for
organizing the essay?
There are many ways to organize it, but here is one
suggestion:
I. Introduction
A. Hook or general introduction statement that
gives context to understand why you are talking
about this topic
B. A summary (brief -about 5-8 sentences)
C. Thesis that tells your reader your two
responses.
II. Body
A. Discussion of first response/reaction
B. Discussion of second response/reaction
III. Conclusion
A Attribution (source information) and topic
B. reminder of your two responses
C.one final thought on the topic (advice a prediction, a
question to reflect on)
How do I support my
responses?
You can bring in quotes from the reading to show the idea or
information you are responding to. Be sure to use quotes and
cite it correctly.
You can also bring in your own personal experiences to help
illustrate your ideas.
Will I be graded on MLA
formatting and language
use?
Yes, a small part of the grade will be based on how well you
proofread your language use. Be especially careful with end
punctuation and sentence structure.
You will also need to use MLA formatting. If you prefer to use
APA formatting, you can. Please reach out to me for guidance
if you use APA.
