Then, discuss how the writer uses ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade, giving specific examples of each from the article to support your thesis. 

Begin with the following thesis statement:

In the New York Times opinion article “How Low Can They Go?”, author Dowd (2020) uses ethos, pathos, and logos to try to persuade the readers … (complete this sentence – to what effect?)

Then, discuss ethos (expertise):  is the author an authority? trustworthy? why or why not? use support to prove your point.

Then, discuss pathos (passion/emotions) : how does the author use emotion to try to persuade the readers? Give examples of words, anecdotes (stories), examples, sentence variety, etc. the author uses to persuade the audience. How does the audience feel/react to the words/anecdotes/examples?

Then discuss logos (logic): how does the author use logic and reasoning to persuade the audience? Where is the argument valid? Where does the author use logical fallacies? Identify the fallacy(ies) and explain. 

Conclusion: Was the author effective in persuading the audience?
