Chapter one provides a framework for the textbook by presenting a sociological perspective for studying social problems. The chapter raises important questions. 

  1. How do you define a social problem? How many people should suffer for something to be defined as a social problem?
  2. How do different values, beliefs, and norms affect the definition of social problems?
  3. What are causes of social problems, and what are the relationships between those causes?
