Assignment : Florida Child Care Professional Certificate Competency Goal 4 or National Child Development Associate Competency Goal II

SPS 40.02, SPS 40.03, SPS 40.07, SPS 41.06

Description:  Writing competency statements enables Early Childhood professionals to illustrate understanding of fundamental skills necessary to create high quality care and education for infants and toddlers.

Directions:  For the Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC) write a competency statement for:

Competency Goal 4: Development of educational programs that improve motor, language, and cognitive development of children, including literacy development.

Write a 500-word statement that addresses how you meet this goal for young infants, mobile infants, and toddlers. Make sure that you address each area for each age group:  motor, language, cognitive and literacy development.

First, introduce the importance of educational programs that improve motor, language, and cognitive development of children, including literacy development. 

Second, describe objectives to create this type of program.

Third, describe activities you implement to improve motor, language, and cognitive development of children, including literacy development.

This statement should be typed and carefully proofread for clarity, correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.  (Give your statement to another adult to carefully read before submitting.)

Note:  If you are working on the Child Development Associate (CDA), address Competency Goal II: To advance physical and intellectual competence.

Competency Goal II must include 4 Functional Areas:

(a) Functional Area 4: Physical –Candidate provides a variety of equipment, activities, and opportunities to promote the physical development of children.

(b) Functional Area 5: Cognitive-Candidate provides activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, and problem-solving appropriate to the developmental levels and learning styles of children.

(c) Functional Area 6:  Communication-Candidate actively communicates with children and provides opportunities and support for children to understand, acquire, and to use verbal and nonverbal means of communicating thoughts and feelings.

(d) Functional Area 7:  Creative-Candidate provides opportunities that stimulate children to play with sound, rhythm, language, materials, space, and ideas in individual ways and to express their creative abilities.

For each functional area, write one-page addressing how you meet the needs of young infants, mobile infants and toddlers.  Connect this to the classroom environment in which you are teaching/observing.
