ESSAY QUESTIONS

What i have included

My culture self identify group will African American  and i am a  Christian this will be used for part one

This essay is in TWO parts.  The first part will focus on YOUR personal experiences and the second will focus on the “HOW YOU SEE US” series of videos posted in Module 9

  1. First, focus on how you define yourself.  How do you think you are presented in Pop Culture and the Mass Media?  Consider how you see yourself in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, etc (go back to the “Cultural Self-Identity Groups” discussed ealier in the trimester).  Do you see a specific “stereotype” that is prevelant in Pop Culture?  Where exactly do you see these stereotypes or generalities?  Be specific; you can refer to examples in film, TV, social media, advertisement, magazines, popular music, etc.   Also consider more “positive” presentations – where do you see a more realistic or less stereotypical representation of your identity?  Please be specific and  find  a magazine ,film  or poplar music and make sure to quote the examples so credit will not be deducted

Part two

2.Second, refer to the series of videos on YouTube called “HOW YOU SEE ME”.   You only need to focus on ONE Of the videos (from #4, 5, 7, 8, 11, and 12 – do not refer to videos 1, 2, or 3.  Also, do not focus on video #6 – “WOMEN”, #9 – “BODY SIZE”, or #10 – “MEN”).  If you want to bring up more than one of the videos, you can. If you want to include gender aspects, you may, but don’t make those the main focus of your attention. However, do NOT repeat the same cultural group focus that you used in the first part of this essay.  In this part of the essay, address the perceptions of this group of people as they describe them (in other words, in the ARABS video, how do the interviewees in the video describe how they are perceived?  How are they “stereotyped”?).  Where do those perceptions come from?  Where in Popular Culture can you see examples of these stereotypes and general perceptions that the interviewees speak about?  Be specific about how this group says they are percieved, and bring up some specific examples of those types of portrayals in popular culture.  How do you see me videos ( https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfjTXaT9NowjmBcbR7gJVFECprsobMZiX&si=HOzVzQH6DwBTHgWb) video link for part 2  you Can chose which everyone you want Just make sure that you do not copy anything from the first part and make sure to quote anything that is taken from other content.

In both parts, you will need to be able to name specific places (TV shows, movies, advertising, song lyrics, other forms of Pop Culture).

BONUS – up to 20 extra points for posting a link to an example from tv, movies or other pop culture text that is an example of the kinds of stereotypes you mention in your Essay.  Do not use a clip that might be discussed or referenced in the How You See Me video.  Your video MUST be an example from Pop Culture  DO NOT post a lecture or documentary discussing or addressing this cultural group.  I am looking for actual portrayals of this cultural group, NOT documentaries or discussions of the issue.  Make sure to briefly explain the relevance of the video you post.  Post the link in your Essay before submitting it.

Submitting a link is not a guarantee of extra credit points.  Make sure to follow instructions.  No extra credit for assignments turned in late.
