CMD 406 – Diagnosis of Speech-Language Pathology

Homework  #2

My Comment: Chapter 3 goes into great detail about the basic parts that are necessary for diagnostic tests in speech-language pathology to be accurate. The explanation of the main ideas behind psychometric properties was especially brought out by the question, So how do we determine whether the test is a quality test, or is a “sound measure” of the behavior we are trying to sample? We need to consider the test’s validity and reliability. ( Pindzola, Pg58). Helped me understand how It’s important to carefully choose testing tools, and this quote makes the point that truth and dependability are the most important parts of a good test. It’s a powerful warning that the tools we use in professional settings must not only say they are accurate, but also show it through results that can be repeated. This realization makes it clear that we need to use diagnostic tools that are up to date with the complicated nature of human behavior and that our methods are based on dependability and validity.

My Question: A difficult part of psychometric testing is talked about in Chapter 3 when it talks about how to make sense of normal data through the view of diversity. When I think about the sentence, “The other important score we must deal with in order to make sense of normative data is some measure of variability (variance) in the standardization sample,”( Pindzola,Pg 64). I want to learn more about how this variability affects the usefulness and fairness of standard tests for people from different backgrounds. What should we do about the fact that test results aren’t always the same? This is especially important when testing people from different language and cultural groups. This is very important because it shows the wide range of changes that the normal group experiences. So, why is it so important to understand and use this measure of variability to make our diagnostic tests more accurate and open to everyone? What methods could be used to make sure our readings take into account the different situations of the people we serve?
