Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to facilitate students’ understanding of the quantitative research process in general and hypothesis making in specific. In this assignment, students are proposing to conduct fundamental research. Students are being asked to identify a potential “cause of the crime’ and use it as the independent variable (IV) and use ‘crime’ as the dependent variable (DV). Next, students will use the identified IV and DV to create different types of hypotheses with the templates provided in this module. Students are expected to complete this assignment on their own. Students will have all the class materials to complete this assignment.

Tasks to complete/Questions to answer (10 points in total):

  • 1. Identify a “cause of crime” and use it as the IV. (1pt.)
  • 2. Confirm that students will use “crime” as the DV. (1pt.)
  • 3. Use the IV and DV to create a “null hypothesis.” (2pt.)
  • 4. Use the IV and DV to create a “non-directional hypothesis.” (2pt.)
  • 5. Use the IV and DV to create a “directional hypothesis with a positive correlation between IV and DV” (2pt.)
  • 6. Use the IV and DV to create a “directional hypothesis with a negative correlation between IV and DV” (2pt.)
