Integrative Essay

Guidelines for Writing the Integrative Essay

The Integrative Essay must be a minimum length of 750 words (about three pages), typed, double-spaced, using Arial font or a similar, easy-to-read 12-point font.

Any essay that does not include intellectual substance and cover the five key dimensions in sufficient detail with writing at college level will be returned to the student for revision.   Essays will be assessed on depth and quality of the key dimensions outlined in this appendix and scored using the Grading Criteria Rubric below.

Summary

Identify all four events you attended and give a BRIEF overview of the topics discussed.  DO NOT give a lengthy synopsis of the event! The overview of each should be limited to three sentences at the most and include the speaker’s main thesis.

Diversity of Communities and Cultures

Provide an introspective analysis of YOUR own views on the material discussed in EACH event.  How do you interpret the overall message the speaker/event was trying to get across? Do you agree or disagree with what the speaker/event had to say? Explain why you agree or disagree.  Properly cite the event speaker(s) in support of your argument (see page 3 of this syllabus). You may also cite other sources, as long as they are credible/scholarly and relevant.

Engaged Citizenship for Change

Explain how EACH event is specifically connected to at least one of the central themes of engaged citizenship (page 1 of this syllabus) AND how the event encourages people to come together to promote change.  Refer back to any other ECCE courses you may have taken and show how they have helped you understand what engaged citizenship truly means.

Drawing Connections to One’s Own Experience

Apply the content of AT LEAST ONE event to the student’s own life and experiences.  Can you think of something relevant you’ve personally gone through that can be tied in with the events you attended? (i.e. How you have overcome a setback or disadvantage)

Integration

Explore IN DETAIL how ALL of the four events you attended relate to one another.  Find a particular element the events have in common and provide a thoughtful analysis of this element.  Use direct references to the issues discussed in the events to support your analysis.
