“Hills Like White Elephants” -by Ernest Hemingway
Prompt: After reviewing this week’s resource on style and tone , discuss “Hills like White Elephants” – by Ernest HemingwayIf you had to name the author’s style, what would you call it and why? Give examples from the text in your discussion. Show how the style and/or tone (as well as related terms like point-of-view or word choice) helps to inform the meaning of the story as a whole.
Requirements: -10 for each requirement not met
1) Clearly state which story and prompt question from above you are addressing in the introduction.
2) Clearly answer one (1) of the prompts from above.
3) Your analysis must contain at least ONE direct quote from the text (with MLA in-text citations)
4) Your finished response must be at least 650 words.
5) Clearly state which story you are using as your Primary Source.
6) You must use at least one secondary source that significantly supports your analysis.
7) You must have at least one direct quote from all sources listed in your Works Cited page.
8) You must have at least one paraphrase from the primary source (the Hemingway story you chose).
Primary sources are the base unto which you are writing your paper. In this case, your primary source is the Hemingway story you have chosen.
Secondary sources are written about primary source. Research in textbooks, newspaper articles, expert testimonials, etc, are considered secondary sources. If you choose to use a Literary Theory, that could be a good secondary source.
If you chose to use one of the other Hemingway stories as a secondary source, it will NOT count toward the secondary source requirement below. The purpose of finding a secondary source is to give you some practice researching.
Additional Rules:
1) You must use proper MLA formatting (including Works Cited page and in-text citations)
2) Do NOT use a citation generator; always check citations against the OWL guidelines
3) You may not use Wikipedia, Sparknotes, Gradesaver, or similar sites as a source
4) In excess of 20% similarity according to Turnitin; Your work will be flagged for possible plagiarism and you will not be given more time without penalty
5) Use only third person point of view to discuss literature. Do not use first person or second person pronouns. This is a research paper, not an opinion piece.
Structure:
1) The introduction paragraph should include a clear thesis statement. It should also clearly identify the title of the literature you’ve chosen to write about, as well as the author’s name.
2) Each body paragraph should have a clear topic sentence that relates back to the thesis. The information in each paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.
3) The conclusion paragraph should restate the thesis, summarize the main points of your argument, and offer some closing context or insight regarding your topic.
4) Mechanics, Grammar, and Punctuation.
5) All written assignments should be mechanically and grammatically correct, with proper punctuation.
