Outline Criteria

  1. Research Outline: Use the Monroe’s Motivated Sequence Outline Template provided in the module for writing your outline.
    • Refer to the Functions of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence Download Functions of Monroe’s Motivated Sequenceto help with how you can construct a persuasive message and to see opportunity to incorporate supporting materials.
    • Use the Outline and Speech Checklist Download Outline and Speech Checklistprior to submitting outline and speech.
  2. Construct a well-developed and supported outline following Monroe’s Motivated Sequence.
    • Well-developed means that claim, grounds, rebuttals, qualifiers are presented.
    • The premise must be thoroughly researched and include expert testimony, examples, illustrations, etc.
    • The action step should be introduced in the satisfaction step and reiterated in the action step. The solution should be simple for audience members to do.
  3. Need Step will have a minimum of two supporting material which will be highlighted in the body of the outline.
  4. Satisfaction Step will have a minimum of two supporting material which will be highlighted in the body of the outline.
  5. All supporting material will also be written following Modern Language Association (MLA) or APA (American Psychological Association, 7th ed.) Links to an external site.guidelines and appear under the Reference section of the outline.
  6. Reference material not permitted: No blogs, podcasts, wiki references. Do not use the textbook as one of the required source material.
    • No credit will be given to supporting materials where the url is the only information provided
