Physical Security Vulnerabilities in K-12 Schools of the Public Education Industry

An essential obligation of the local learning entities that run kindergarten through K–12 schools in America is to develop harmless and safe surroundings that promote efficient learning and schooling. To assist them in meeting this responsibility, the U.S. DHS’s requested the Homeland Security Operational Analysis Center to evaluate the policy background and pertinent works to offer an outline of the problems and enablers linked to school physical safety (Steiner et al., 2021). The results showed that relevant national, local and state rules on school protection are a collection of disengaged decrees, guidelines, and assets. Information concerning how to execute numerous policies is circulated in a range of files held across several entities, developing a problem for local education agency (LEA) leaders who may not be specialists in physical safety in tracing pertinent policy knowledge and comprehending and executing different policies. Moreover, particular state policies demand without offering satisfactory implementation backing that LEAs embrace explicit actions, and numerous LEAs do not have the capital and proficiency to organize competitive implementations (Steiner et al., 2021). Physical restrictions like the built background, physical sites for a novel building, and the edifice and design of existing structures as well present a significant threat to physical safety arrangements. The people in the industry who are dealing with it include the local education agencies, leaders, the Department of Homeland Security, and all stakeholders in the public education industry.

Possible Solution

Policymakers should become mindful of unfunded directives. They should develop and preserve all-inclusive school safety capitals for LEAs; offer openly accessible regulation, apparatuses, and funds to assist LEAs in applying local figures to pinpoint the safety procedures best fit their anticipated safety results, needs, and settings (Steiner et al., 2021). Moreover, they should align regulation, apparatuses, and funds for school physical safety arrangement with other obligatory crisis strategies and deliberate what proficiency LEAs need for physical safety preparation. LEAs should first execute no- or low-price policies and integrate local information in scrutiny and organization. Further, they should ease the weight on school heads to recognize physical safety results and requirements and pick safety actions while providing funds to decrease expenses.
